Clan Campbell Of Argyll!

"The name CAMPBELL is one of considerable antiquity, and the Clan has been one of the most numerous and
powerful in the Highlands. The Argyll branch, in particular, became so powerful that many smaller clans
were absorbed into it - either voluntarily or compulsorily.
Indeed, no Clan can boast of purer, nobler Celtic blood than the Campbells"
~ John Keltie, Historian

The CAMPBELLS are one of the oldest and largest Clans in the Highlands, generally
acknowledged as having been founded in the 11th Century.

Their skill in battle was unequaled, and their influence in Scottish history unmatched.
There are 4 distinct "branches" of Campbells: Campbell of Argyll, Campbell of
Breadalbane
, Campbell of Cawdor, and Campbell of Loudon.

The name "CAMPBELL" originated (allegedly) from the Gaelic "Cam Beul"
(Curved Mouth), a nickname given to Dugald of Lochawe (beloved grandfather of
the Clan Chief), who had a charming way of talking out of one side of his mouth!
Dugald was so cherished by his family, they decided to use his nickname as their
Clan name, even prefering it over the original "Argyll".

The current Clan Chief is the 13th Duke of Argyll,  Torquil Campbell.
He resides at Inveraray Castle (above, in Argyll), the ancestral Clan home

I've been a proud member of
The Clan Campbell Society my entire life.

I even kept my maiden name after I married, all the better to
honor my proud Scottish roots.

Every year I enjoy attending the Ohio Scottish Games, which are held in
Oberlin, Ohio during the last weekend in June. It's always a wonderful experience,
(although it's often a little too warm for this American-Scot's liking).
There's just nothing quite like hearing the swell of the Bagpipes and seeing
a man proudly
wearing the Kilt, to make one's heart 'homesick' for the Motherland.
